Briggs Land, nearly a hundred square miles of rural wilderness, contains the largest antigovernment secessionist movement in the United States. When matriarch Grace Briggs wrests control of the operation from her incarcerated husband, she sparks a war within the community-and her immediate family-that threatens to bring the full power of the federal government down on their heads. o Perfect for fans of Sons of Anarchy and Justified! o In development for an AMC television show!

BONUS REVIEW by Kevin Healy

Briggs Land is Brian Wood's latest timely triumph. It's a mix of militia, government, white supremacy, and crime-imagine Sons of Anarchy crossed with the sovereign citizens movement. The Briggs are a family that exists outside the United States but well within the U.S. borders in a compound not dissimilar to Waco (and in some ways Mormons and Scientology members). The matriarch of the family decides that her prison bound husband can't be trusted to protect what they've built. She's right, and in painful, personal ways. The exposition is presented in fine fashion from the Briggs' perspective countered by the FBI's. That means the writing and the storytelling are both excellent, combined with satisfyingly simple art by Mack Chater. If you're sort of terrified by fringe groups, this book is for you. If you participate in fringe groups, this book is also for you. It's win-win!

I give it 9 out of 10 Grahams
