Date Available: 07/18/2012 BONUS REVIEW by Shanna Berry  I was really excited about Kelly Sue Deconnick taking on a brand new title, not to mention an ongoing centered on a female character (Marvel currently has zero). The cover is striking enough to interest passersby; Carol has a new look, so yeah let’s give it a try… For starters, the interior art is vastly different than that of the cover and first page. It’s jarring to begin with, and it gets worse when the page has less action and becomes dialogue driven. Throw me a set of markers and I can draw better than this. Moving on to the dialogue: Why must every bubble include some quip about how she’s a woman? Is she the first woman super hero to have graced the streets of New York? Was this a flashback to the 40s? “Captain America’s secretary”: a cute observation and yes it is the villain speaking, but not a great way to begin your run. And it just keeps going…page after page of gender mocking. Women writers can sometimes spin their wheels tackling feminism, and my opinion is to just steer clear of the whole issue. Show us Captain Marvel kicks butt without focusing on gender! The best Wonder Woman issues don’t center on anyone questioning her supremacy because of her femininity, but rather everyone’s terrified of the brutal Amazon!! The 2 pages before the last page are fantastic! Why didn’t the issue begin with this?! With an internal dialogue about her losing a bit of her humanity (while filling you in on the whys), as she now pushes herself to the edge of the sky to feel some type of rush. It’s poetic really, and sad that the entire issue didn’t have this power. 5 out of 10 Grahams VERY FINE/NEAR MINT
