Captain Swing #1 (2010) wraparound

$4.50
VERY FINE/NEAR MINT
From the sparking-mad mind of Warren Ellis, the creator of AETHERIC MECHANICS and DOKTOR SLEEPLESS, comes an electrical romance of a pirate utopia thwarted: CAPTAIN SWING & THE ELECTRICAL PIRATES OF CINDERY ISLAND. This crackling new mini-series is illustrated in Raulo Caceres' stunning woodcut style, and presented in full color. London, 1830: newly-minted copper Charlie Gravel keeps seeing things he's not supposed to. A crooked Bow Street Runner with a flintlock revolver, flying things that are not supposed to fly, and the violent Scientific Phantasmagoria that is christened Spring-Heeled Jack, but is known by other names. It is the time of Captain Swing and his Electrical Pirates, and history will never be the same. CAPTAIN SWING #1 is available with a Regular or Wraparound cover by series artist Raulo Caceres, and a special retailer incentive Penny Dreadful cover designed to look like a classic novel of yore.
Date Available: 02/24/2010
BONUS REVIEW by Shanna Berry

Fans of steampunk should enjoy this unusual tale, described by Warren Ellis as “not steampunk [but] an Electrical Romance of a Pirate Utopia Thwarted”. The artwork is stunningly gritty and the paneling is just brilliant, crossing many genres with one panel of art reminiscent of early American comic strips followed immediately by art that jumps out of the panel with extreme perspective. It is pleasing when a creator takes full advantage of the medium, perfectly placing literary excerpts where they would best add to the story– done best by Avatar with no ads, of course! And the art just constantly propels this story; there is never a dull moment or a wasted panel. This issue was fun and exciting, intelligent and intriguing, leaving me frothing for the next issue!
I give it 10 out of 10 Grahams
