For over fifty years, Barbie has helped young girls come of age in the midst of an ever-changing social climate, but what do we really know about her? Female Force: Ruth Handler tells the story of how America's favorite fashion doll emerged from the seedy underworld of German sex symbols and cigarette shop gag gifts to become one of history's most iconic women.
Date Available: 06/08/2011
BONUS REVIEW by JOHN SCHAEFER

I must admit that Blue Water's Female Force (and related Force title) have done nothing for me. However, Cudos to them on the Olivia Newton-John Breast Cancer issue. So when I passed by their current issue featuring Ruth Handler, I was ready to keep walking. But then I remembered a small fact I had read once. That Barbie was based on a German cartoon about a rather questionable golddigging young woman. Would this fact come up in Ruth's story? And not only did it but in fascinating detail. The book tells a wonderful story about a woman with a valid idea who kept going even though no one was listening. Between the way, she sidestepped he husband's objections to famed Hollywood Make-Up Artist Bud Westmore's contibutions to Jack Ryan's *ahem* modifications, this bizarre history is entertaining. Plus check out the creepy ad on the back cover. 7 out of 10 Grahams.
