Mage Hero Denied #0

VERY FINE/NEAR MINT
(W/A/CA) Matt Wagner
MATT WAGNER returns with the third and final volume of his epic fantasy trilogy-MAGE: THE HERO DENIED. This long-awaited conclusion follows the adventures of the reluctant everyman hero Kevin Matchstick, who, after encountering a shaggy and beguiling wizard, discovers he is the reincarnation of the legendary Pendragon and able to wield the power of the mystical weapon, Excalibur. The story picks up several years after the fateful climax of THE HERO DEFINED and finds Kevin beginning to once again doubt the virtue of his actions and the course of his destiny. This introductory, half-sized issue #0 continues MAGE's tradition of an 'Interlude' short-adventure, bridging the gap between this series and the previous storyline. It also acts as a perfect jumping-on spot for new readers.

Once upon a time, Mage was my bestest, favoritest funny book of all time. Back then, a wee Matt Wagner turned Arthur legend into a an independent book that was as good as those of the Big Two. It was one time when many comic shops and their patrons started to think outside of the spinner rack. Still holds up. Then the 90's happened, an older Matt made another Mage, magic wasn't green anymore, and it turned out to be as fun to look at as ill-fitting grunge clothes hanging on an unemployed slacker. For me, at this point, Matt's batting about 50/50. (Batting...heh) If #0 is any indication, we're about to go into a tie breaker. With solid art and spectacular coloring by Brennan Wagner, it seems like it may finally be time to find the Fisher King, 33 years later. Take that Twin Peaks.

I give it 9 out of 10 Grahams
