Monsters, Inc. meets Kramer Vs Kramer meets Poltergeist. Jamie has a monster in the closet. Jamie's parents don't believe him. Jamie's parents fight. Jamie's family is moving tomorrow, so even if there IS a monster, Jamie will be fine. Jamie's dad is as unlikable a likable guy you're ever to come across. Will Jamie's dad, who has come up short in nearly every previous circumstance in his life be able to step up to help his son?
Yeah, probably.
This book is written by James Tynion who's riding really high with Something Is Killing The Children, House Of Slaughter, and the miraculously good Nice House On The Lake right now. That makes him ideal for this sort of horror, and makes this book being a little disappointing a bit of a shock. I'm sure fans of those titles will enjoy it, but its fair to say its coming in at fourth place.
Better than the writing is the gorgeous art by Gavin Fullerton. Heavy blacks, implied textures, great thick contours, and fingerprints on the pages. It brings to mind elements of Jorge Fornes, Tyler Boss, and John Van Fleet. It's the best thing about the book, and elevates it into 'yeah, you should check this out' territory.
