IDW is pushing their 'Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons' very heavily. War For Humanity, not so much.
That's a shame because this book is somehow...stunning? The story is a serious one asking 'Is Godzilla a force for good?'. It's also a full blown kaiju-fest, as it sees then end of two well known Japanese guests come to their bloody, melty end. That story? Its written by Head Lopper's own Andrew MacLean, elevating this title instantly from 'first impression disdain' to 'more than mild curiousity'.
Then there's the art, because this is a comic, and most comics have pictures with their words. I have no idea who Jake Smith is, for sure haven't seen his work before, and don't have an accurate vocabulary to describe it. The best I can do on short notice is that it is 70% of what a Daniel Clowes children's book would look like. There's no realism here, but the art is done in full service of a non-childish story. Its so very very good, and I encourage everyone to pick up an issue to flip through for yourself. At a time when so much comic art can be assessed as "I know what I'm looking at, and I know it should be better", this is fully "I don't know what I'm looking at, and I'm not sure I deserve this."
Highly enjoyable book start to finish, and the second issue is somehow even better than the first.
