Imagine my great joy to see Marvel reaching out to revisit Doug Moench, Mike Ploog, and Alex Nino's take on a Tolkien like adventure featuring characters with huge foreheads, pointy ears, and unnerving eyes like those disturbing paintings of cherub like children with eyes which occupy 3/4 of their faces. But this was the late 70's and books like Marvel Premiere were willing to give anything a try!
I give Marvel credit for allowing Mike Del Mundo's painted artwork to remind us of the wonderful art that used to appear in Marvel's black and white magazines but this is yet another book with no reason for existing.
First off, Weirdworld #1 has no relation to the original one-shot. This is nothing but a series of obvious clues and easter eggs to the overall storyline that is Battleworld but that's it. And with all the sword and sorcery characters in the Marvel stable, we are given Arkon. Arkon, a minor villain at best from a few fill-in issues of Avengers and the Fantastic Four. Arkon, whose overinflated machismo embarrassed men from all walks of life. In his constant quest for a warrior bride! Why Arkon?!
While the art is genuinely unique and hints of appearances by Man-Thing and Skull the Slayer are eyebrow raising. I don't think it is enough. If you buy the book for the artwork only it might be worth it but this isn't a top 10-er by any means.
