Byrne fades back to his indy roots, to a title he wrote and drew and promised to return. It’s your basic Byrne, with the artistic beauty and clarity that won him many fans, yet with the same writing style, much of it plot-driven mysteries that contain stereotypical characters (they are either bad or good; rarely does Byrne go outside those lines) that has served him pretty well over the last multiple decades. I have been one of the few who have followed him from comic to comic, since he stresses clarity in both drawing and writing, but lately, yes, I have wished that he would explore just drawing other writer’s stories, to just flat-out explore his artistic talent. Still, I enjoyed this comic. He has that edge, that slow building menacing touch that captivates. Main complaint here is that he needed more of a recap from the first Next Men saga, since it has been a long time. But, I guess, there’s time for that, too. Enjoy him while he’s still around, is what I say.
