Five hundred years after the end of the world, mutated monsters prowl the desolate wilds, and savage marauders from the wastelands of Jerz scourge the helpless N'Yark tribe. Samson, the strongest man on Earth, defender of the N'Yark, singlehandedly invades the forbidding fortress of Terra, Queen of the Jerz. Ten thousand hardened Jerz warriors swarm to her defense. The odds for survival look grim. If only the Jerz had more warriors!
Mighty Samson returns to comics, reimagined by legendary writer Jim Shooter and illustrated by Patrick Olliffe (Untold Tales of Spider-Man, Spider-Girl, 52).

Dark Horse goes for another re-launch, this one of an old time Gold Key Comics title featuring an ubermenschlich Samson in a post-apocalyptic world. In this new world, Jim Shooter shows us mutants, opportunistic bystanders, and slaves. It’s a complicated world, however, where slaves do not ask for instant freedom, not all injustices quickly revenged. Rather, it’s a world where its participants, from Commander to serf, question themselves, question how a slave owner and a slave should act, question what it means to be living within a society, and how one should act within it. Yeah, ok, it’s not THAT deep, but Shooter does a fine job of bridging fun entertainment with profound questions that I found enjoyable, to say the least. There are oddities, like the insistence of calling a certain character “old” when she looks to be in her twenties, not to mention the unexplained power of Samson himself. But if you are looking for something different, something fresh, I highly recommend this comic. It's going in its own direction, not just following old comic book saws (though it knows them, that’s for sure), and that is always welcome.
