Smart. That’s it: smart. I like a writer, in this case Daniel Corey, who is obviously capable of telling a great story, then does his homework and puts in a out-of-my-face effort, especially in a first issue, where you presumably have more time to work out the kinks. The story is simple—Professor Moriarty has had his struggles against Sherlock Holmes, and has moved on to other things. But something threatens to draw out this master criminal from his puttering existence. Through it all, Daniel characterizes well—the first page we get what drives Moriarty. He offers details, such as the 3 rules that Moriarty lives by. And he gets the whole Sherlock Holmes/Englishman persona down pat, making it all feel like a splendid modernization of a new tale. Did I mention a touch of Hellboy, too? He does his homework, and it’s a joy to see the result.
