Image publisher Eric Stephenson recently told the ComicsPRO expo that (and I'm paraphrasing) 'Licensed comics will never be the real thing. They only exist because people like those things, and those 'comics' give them more of something they already like'. Plenty of people have taken issue with that statement, and its my turn. Dark Horse is publishing the new Terminator comics. Working on this book are J. Michael Straczynski, screenwriter, comics author, and the auteur behind 'Babylon 5', and Pete Woods, long time DC favorite who's style is fluid enough to match the needs of any of the titles he's worked on. They both bring their 'A' game to this licensed title, expanding and developing themes and ideas started in the films and using the strengths of the comics medium to best present them. What will it be like when an artificial intelligence becomes self aware? What is appealing about the worst of man to a world of machines? Where does man's own history fit into how their fate is playing out? The past and future both move towards new and bleaker outcomes in this issue, with excellent work by everyone involved. The people who make 'licensed comics' are absolutely making the real thing, and this issue is just one of many examples of current books that exemplify that.

I give it 8 out of 10 Grahams
