Reviews

This book has multiple things going for it, if you like comics that were created in the 1960s. I haven't been able to keep up with all of my required reading recently, but this one rose to the top of the stack and I realized why while reading it.

I'm not a huge AVENGERS fan, they're fine, I'm not a big Paul Levitz fan, he's a smart/nice guy and while I am a big Alan Davis fan the art looked off at a glance. Still there's one reason this book rose to the top of my stack and that's ACCESSIBILITY.
This is one of those 'lost tales' books. A story that takes place IMMEDIATELY after Avengers #11 (1960s) - very early in the Avengers history/timeline there isn't a lot to keep straight, no tie-ins with Dark Web or any other event books.
With Davis inking his own work, the slick smooth lines are all gone replaced with a dark rougher brush approach. There's times when it looks straight up like Neal Adams inking his own work, but then there's times when he just misses the mark and gets done with the panel and moves on. Similar to what Neal would deliver at times. But it's mostly great, and Davis knows how to let a page breath and when to leave out a lot of unnecessary background noise.
Paul Levitz a long time DC writer and head honcho makes his Marvel debut here, and he does his best to write a 60s Marvel style book, and it works. If you like these classic characters iterations in this period, you can't help but enjoy the book, and while pricey at $5.99 cover price - it is double size and delivers a lot for your money.
