Those of you who frequent the St. Charles store may know I haven't been a huge fan of Mark Millar's writing in recent years. For a writer who clearly has immense talent and a skill for concepting stories, he frequently failed to resolve them, or allowed his comics to devolve into sensationalist nonsense. Incredible violence isn't a novel story idea, and it certainly isn't a taste that can't be satisfied by simply looking up the day's news. Having said all that, Huck is Millar's best story in years, in the first issue. Minimal dialogue and exposition still manage to clearly convey the attitudes and outlooks of all the major characters, and Huck himself is a genuinely earnest and honest man who is painted as a hero, rather than being the sort of vitriolic and caustic parody that Millar has leaned on in the past. Huck is highly recommended, and I hope future issues continue the themes and threads started in this issue.
