A Gotham with swearing and brutal violence? That sounds more like how Gotham would actually be, given that its a crime deadened nerve cluster that only feels pain when it can feel at all. You get a lottttta orphans in Gotham, I'm just sayin' is all. What if you didn't have an orphan? Could someone with a parent have a reason to become a vigilante? They could if they were rich. They could if they were wronged. Violet Paige is both of those things. While we don't know all the details on why that is just yet, I do know I want to see more. If you need a comparison, she's maybe a DC answer to Jessica Jones, but with more animals being eaten and birthday cakes. I really can't tell if she's not a sane person. I don't think she can either.
The plot is loosely borrowed from elements of Tim Burton's Batman, which is to say someone is making art until people die, probably including children. Ugly business, presented beautifully by Tommy Lee Edwards (no, not the actor from 'Volcano'. The artist from Bullet Points). I'd love to read the next issue of this today. This is the first Young Animal book I can say that about.
