BONUS REVIEW by KIRK JACKSON
This is a great week for independent books and new titles, which makes it surprising that my pick of this week is a long time favorite distributed by one of the “Big Two”. The new issue of Powers by Bendis and Oeming is a nice fresh start for the title, which is great, seeing as though I barely remember what happened in the last issue that came out……. I don’t remember when! What I do remember is the cliffhanger. This is satisfyingly dealt with right off the bat, so that we can get to the heavy philosophical ideas Bendis has been cooking up for this new storyline. Some Powers that call themselves Gods it seems may not be as immortal as they claim, and Walker now finds himself having to interrogate suspects that walk that thin line between Superhero and Deity. It makes you think about characters we take for granted such as Thor and Captain Marvel, and whether the people around them actually believe that they’re gods. Oeming’s designs are perfect for the characters in this book, and certain pages seem to glow slightly on the page. Once again, Powers gives us Superhero deconstructionist fiction at its best.
