VERY FINE/NEAR MINT

Written by GARTH ENNIS Pencils & Cover by STEVE DILLON Variant Cover by JOHN ROMITA JR.

“THE RESURRECTION OF MA GNUCCI,” PART 1 The latest offering from the red-hot Marvel Knights line reunites the seminal creative team of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon for a special, weekly-shipping 6-part limited sequel to their legendary story arc, “Welcome Back, Frank.” It all starts when two mobsters take a trip to the zoo and piss off the wrong monkey. Limbs are lost (the kind you can’t easily replace), vultures are fed (with said appendages), and then things get, like, really crazy. Like back-from-the-dead crazy. That’s right -- she’s back and she wants payback. Ma Gnucci. Eighty-five pounds of hairless, armless, legless evil.

REVIEW by Brian Fisher

I must confess, as I do often to my customers that I am NOT a Punisher fan. I find him to be a very one dimensional character whose M.O. of kill, kill, kill is a bit off-putting. Suffice it to say I’ve never read Garth Ennis’ Punisher MAX series. But there was one story about the Punisher that I did enjoy, just one. That story was Ennis’ “Welcome Back, Frank” story arc. There was a certain keen sense of humor permeating that story that made it immensely enjoyable. So when I heard that Ennis and artist Steve Dillon were returning to that character, while hesitant I was intrigued… plus, there really wasn’t a lot of good reading this week. So I read the first issue of “War Zone.” I loved it… I loved it the way I loved “WBF.” The humor, which I’ve heard was absent from the MAX series is back in full force, and just reinforces my love of monkeys (read it and you’ll understand… and laugh). It’s the kind of sick, twisted humor that readers should come to expect from Ennis. Sure, Ennis does serious well, but there’s nothing he does better than dark humor.

I give it 9 out of 10 Grahams
