VERY FINE/NEAR MINT
(W) James Tynion IV
(A/CA) Joshua Hixson
SERIES PREMIERE As snow falls over Milwaukee in 1972, a blood-stained Santa Claus commits unimaginable atrocities against young men. Fifty years later, a troubled young writer interviews this so-called "Deviant Killer," who still maintains his innocence from behind bars. And as Christmas approaches once again, the past returns, wielding a sharpened ax. Eisner-winning writer JAMES TYNION IV (W0RLDTR33, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH) and acclaimed artist JOSHUA HIXSON (The Plot, Children of the Woods) unite for a pitch-black holiday horror story.
Date Available: 11/15/2023
BONUS REVIEW by Kevin Healy

Something is killing the children.

KILLED the children, more to the point, and killed them in 1973. That something was dressed as Santa, managed to frame a criminal of a different sort, and James Tynion thinks we want to read about this going into the holidays.

He's probably right.

To steal from the great Roger Ebert's review for ALIENS

'I don't know how else to describe this: The comic made me feel bad. It filled me with feelings of unease and disquiet and anxiety. I walked outside and I didn't want to talk to anyone. I was drained. I'm not sure "Deviant" is what we mean by entertainment. Yet I have to be accurate about this title: It is a superb example of comic book craft.'

I give it 7 out of 10 Grahams
