Everything that is right and good about the Ed Brubaker/ Sean Phillips combo is on display in Fade Out #7. A mix of small, personal moments blended with material pulling on threads of the larger story presented in a clean but dark style. Phillips' art has always been noir friendly. This book is the best home he's had for that element of his work (take that 'Criminal'!). What really pushes this issue to next level status are the colors by Elizabeth Breitweiser. Be sure to check out the bar sequence near the end of the book. Starting cool and warming up as tempers flair, she nails how a fight feels. It's a perfect sequence w/out ever being garish. Seamy never looked so good.
