I will surely be tarred and feathered for this, but this issue was so self-aggrandizing it made it hard to enjoy. Apparently this issue sent other to tears and cheers, and to me I raged like Atrocitus.
I love Green Lantern. My favorite run being Denny O’Neil and Neil Adam’s run in the 80s, and now Johns’ run comes to a close with one square bound book that many will say is Geoff Johns’ best work. I disagree.
Johns destroyed elements of the GL Universe that I feel are essential; some of my favorite aspects of the universe are no longer. In order for a new writer to continue what once was before this issue, they will have to ret-con most of this book. And I hope they do.
Sinestro is and has been my favorite character in the GLU, second to Mogo. Hal is BORING without the balance of Sinestro (or fighting the Guardians, which is also over). After this issue, we are left with Hal the Almighty, most important being in the history of the universe – Sinestro is no longer an active member and his future is written in stone. We even see Hal as an old man, proving once and for all Johns’ is such a girl (yes I get the irony of me making that statement, I don’t care).
Going beyond that to some very specific beefs – one minute Hal is dead, wielding a black ring, and the next page BOOM he’s alive with a green lantern ring. A few pages prior, Kyle says even he can’t resurrect Hal, he only has the power to heal. Sooooooooo…how is Hal alive? It took the white light to defeat Nekron in Blackest Night, but in this issue he just disappears. It’s just all over the place and illogical to an absurd point.
This issue wraps up with a pretty little bow – and it’s just TOO EASY. Sinestro wielding Parallax took one simple panel – this should be a story arc all to itself.
Apologies if my thoughts are fragmented and scattered; but this review mirrors the book in that respect. Scattered. Just stop by GCC Edgewater for a more in-depth discussion, I’m still taking it all in, but it wasn’t an enjoyable experience for this long-time fan of the Corps who still keeps her Sector 2814 ID in her wallet.
The most self-serving universe destroying book I’ve ever read. But at least we have MOGO back!
