The Haunted Tank is back in action, but this time it’s an M1 Abrams in modern-day Iraq! African American tank commander Jamal Stuart has his 21st century war ride in full battle rattle and is ready for anything – anything except the whistling-Dixie combat guru ghost who shows up uninvited! Of course, this isn’t the first time the spirit of Confederate Civil War General J.E.B. Stuart has helped guide a tank. In times of war he makes himself available to assist his descendants in battle. Jamal Stuart, meet your forefather! It’s the newest chapter in the legacy of a long-time DC icon from writer Frank Marraffino (The Dark Goodbye) and artist Henry Flint (OMEGA MEN).

REVIEW by Brian Fisher

If you told me a story based in modern day Iraq with heavy overtones of race-relations would be the funniest single issue I’ve read in a long time, I’d call you a liar. Until I read this issue. Usually Vertigo does drama, horror and other serious genres very well, but the successful comedy, be it at Vertigo or any other company for that matter is few and far between. This incarnation of “Haunted Tank” still features good old boy Confederate soldier Jeb Stuart, but this time on a very different battlefield. Charged to follow his ancestors into battle as long as there are battles to be fought, Jeb now enters the conflict in the Middle East. But hilarity ensues when the young Mr. Stuart he’s protecting turns out not to be who he was expecting. Vertigo has been releasing hit after hit recently and this is another title they can add to the hits.

I give it 8 out of 10 Grahams
