REVIEW by Brian Fisher
There’ve been a lot of complaints lately about the Avengers titles and their ties to Secret Invasion, especially from me. Well, let me tell you, this issue shut me up a bit. Yeah, there are still no “Avengers” in this issue of New Avengers, but they’ve finally ditched the boring, repetitive Skrull back stories for a decidedly less boring focus on the Hood’s syndicate and their ties to the Skrull invasion. I’ve been thinking since they were introduced that the Hood’s criminal organization deserved their own ongoing (or at least a mini) series. I mean, who doesn’t want more books focusing on villains? This seems to be step one toward that happening (Dark Avengers anyone?). Billy Tan’s artwork is still atrocious, but less painful on the eyes this time around (I guess that’s an improvement). And Bendis’ writing seems less forced here than over in Secret Invasion. He seems like he’s having more fun writing the criminal element than the heroic.
