BONUS REVIEW by GARY OWENS

With long chains, a red cape that goes from here to eternity, and fingernails that need to be cut, we finally make it, eighteen years in the making, to Spawn’s Super Giant-Sized Anniversary issue. I admit I’m surprised, and impressed; McFarlane has stuck to his guns, and many readers have supported him on it. For me, this character does not embrace 200 issues. I’m unwilling to spend money to see The Violator month after month, or the relentless demonic fighting. Spawn is chatty, too; this particular issue was overwrought with dialogue, which had me scratching my head at times on what was being said. Yeah, I figured it out (I think), but it all seemed bravado, like schoolyard name-calling. Still, the art was thrilling, and at $3.99 for an extended format comic—good value. If you like anniversary issues, here’s a cheaper alternative for you. That’s something, at least.
