Jim Lee Variant cover

Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá return with a story as American as semiautomatic weapons. The Umbrella Academy has saved the world, but the house they were raised in is destroyed. One member is bedridden, the side of her head held together with tape; and another has lost her voice, the source of her power. Now that they’ve fulfilled their destiny, does the Umbrella Academy have any future at all? The Umbrella Academy returns for a second six-issue series—Dallas, where we put the term-hero-to the test. Variant cover by Jim Lee!

BONUS REVIEW by GARY OWENS

I’m leery of first issues of a series that begin with a full page of “What has gone on before.” As a new reader, any series that starts this way has a couple strikes against it…it makes me fell like a bought a novel that had its first 100 pages ripped out, and replaced by a one-page summary. So, despite this, the issue does a fair job at introducing characters, showing us the infighting, and pulling us to the arch villain. The art, by Gabriel Ba, works well, though Gerard Way, the writer, does an odd job of introducing a team that is never in the same room together. Strange, and fairly unfulfilling. Probably everything will work better as the story evolves …if I’m still reading.

I give it 5 out of 10 Grahams.
