Kaptara #1 (2015)

While Zdarsky (whose credits include both art and writing duties, including the fantastic Howard the Duck where he's scripting) has a fantastic sense of whimsy and humor, he's wearing his silliness a bit too overtly with Kaptara #1. None of these completely new characters are particularly relateable and their humor comes off more defensive than endearing. They are a diverse group, and this book has the potential for a loyal following in scifi adventure fans because of that and Kaptara's off-center premise plus a curious conclusion. For me, the stakes are uncertain and I don't know who to root for. McLeod's art (with color assists by Becka Kinzie) are exciting, eye-popping, and deserving of recognition. Now, the next issue includes lovingly rendered "Cat Tanks" so I will check out #2 to at least see what that's about...
