What If? Brian Bendis was doing better stuff with Superman than John Byrne? It would look very much like the current run that you've been ignoring. Big stuff happens in this issue. Not that anything actually "happens" in comic books, but sometimes things change. They may eventually change back, but I think this one is for keepsies. Addressing a fundamental dishonesty inherent in the character since the thirties, Bendis has both managed to give himself a fascinating B story to write, but he has also made Superman more admirable then he already was. It's not a story that will be worth very much in the future, but it is a story that is very worthwhile to the character for the foreseeable future. Highly recommended for those who get misty when the violin music swells, anybody who wants to read a story with somebody you can look up to instead of look at with disdain, and the lapsed but open-minded Superman fan.

I give it 9 out of 10 Grahams
